If you would like to get to know 3 powerful women taking over the airways who are brilliant Psychologist, you are in for a treat! Dr. Erica, Dr. April, and Dr. Shari’s podcast is like listening to your girlfriends have a conversation about keeping up with your mental health, current events, and making you laugh at the same time(you know that is good for the soul right?). Hold on brothers! There is plenty of great information for you also. Read about these awesome ladies, then go take a listen!
Dr. April and I worked together prior to me moving to Poland. It was a working relationship that transitioned from breakroom conversations to First Thursday Main Street adventures. To say the less we connected over the love of food and dance. Dr. April comes with an array of knowledge and I personally was able to sit in on a few of her classes about suicide prevention. I love the way she is able to capture her audience and get everyone involved without trying.
Dr. Shari and I met through Dr. April and not a beat was skipped. After one outing together we were friends and knowing her you will know why. Dr. Shari has such a welcoming spirit and after all of her features she is a celebrity to me. OMGees! I have been eating and drinking with celebrities! Did I say dancing? (That is good for the soul also!) Nope, but we do that too. Anyways! Dr. Shari launched a website on Wednesday of this week and it is just as chic, eloquent, and beautiful as she is. Make sure you check it out!
Dr. Erica and I met through my dear friend Dr. April also and I must say birds of a feather flock together because we had a good time! We worked out in the heat and survived it all. This charismatic cheerleader turned Psychologist knows how to give it to you straight with a little chaser so the bite is not as hard. OK! Ok. I love her I am who I am attitude!
As stated by the World Health Organization, “mental health is a fundamental component of health, recognition of mental disorders and awareness about its importance is limited. Stigma and lack of understanding about mental disorders are major barriers to seeking help and promoting better mental health. Increasing understanding and overcoming stigma through strategic communications and social mobilization are crucial steps towards strengthening mental health programmes (2017).”
Get to know the 3 Psychs behind the mic:
1. What made you want to go into this industry? What made you want to start a podcast?
Dr. Erica: I was very new to the podcast world when the idea was brought up by the ladies. However, I also found our conversations to be fun and light, yet intellectual and I thought that starting a podcast to share our thoughts and expertise would be a fun thing to do! We enjoy each other’s company and are genuinely friends. So that helped us to have a healthy working relationship when it came to starting and maintaining the podcast.
Dr. April: I have been a fervent listener of podcasts since 2013 and had secured a grant to fund a mental health podcast that I created for my job. So it was an easy yes, when Shari approached us with the idea to join the podcasting world and take our conversations to a broader audience
Dr. Shari: As friends we would have had some amazing insightful conversations with one another that stretch and grow us, and I would often leave thinking, “others should be able to hear this and grow and stretch as well”. So I pitched the idea of a podcast to these amazing women that I am blessed to call friends and voila, 3 Psychs and A Mic was born!
2. How long have you been working in your profession? And working to make your idea a reality?
Dr. Erica: I have worked in the mental health field for about 13 years. I have worked as a therapist, career counselor, psychology professor, public speaker/consultant, and testing psychologist throughout my career.
Dr. Shari: I have been working in this profession for almost 13 years providing therapy in various settings with a diversity of populations. For some time, I carried the vision of creating everyday spaces for mental health and wellness to be a part of daily conversations. The podcast allows for this to happen in a very real and entertaining way. Through our discussions we are able to decrease the stigma of mental health and increase the importance of mental wellbeing.
Dr. April: I have been providing therapy since 2008 and have worked in a variety of settings. Additionally, I’ve been a program coordinator and educator throughout the years and have always found a way to infuse mental health and critical conversations into large-scale programming. My experience in this area has been critical in my success in the consulting and training sector. I have had the opportunity to take the workshops I’ve created internationally as well as I have had the pleasure of working with universities and non-profits who share my passion of normalizing conversations about mental health, promoting resilience, and increasing help-seeking behaviors with the goal of wellness at the forefront.
3. What inspires you to create new content?
Dr. Erica: I like to be inspired by what I hear or see from, friends, family, and the media. If there is a topic of interest being discussed, that is what I want to focus the podcast segments on. I think it is important to address the things that are currently impacting people and offer them knowledge and perspective through the podcast.
Dr. Shari: I often gain inspiration for content from my daily interactions with others and the environment I exist within. Conversations with family and friends spark questions that I think are important to answer and shine light on. We are also very intentional to listen to our audience and gain insight on what needs to be addressed through the comments and interactions with everyone.
Dr. April: I am very active on social media and pay attention to what everyone is talking about. I look for areas of opportunity to take relevant topics and pair them with a mental health lens. Pretty much everything comes back to mental and emotional health so it’s a great way to create exciting content.
4. What would you want people to know about your podcast, company and/or brand?
Dr. Erica: 3 Psychs and a Mic is intended to be light, fun, and informative. We strive for relatability and hope that our listeners consider themselves members of our little “friend group.”
Dr. Shari: 3 Psychs and A Mic is really an ode to how integrated mental health and wellness is in our lives and spaces. We also find importance in the masses seeing 3 Black Women that are professional, fun, down-to-earth psychologists! I hope it portrays that Black women are here to bring the knowledge and psychologists are cool!
Dr. April: I would like them to know that conversations about mental health and wellness can be informative and entertaining. I want them to know we promote being authentic and doing the work to be your best self but also have some fun along the way.
